How long should we keep backward compatibility there?
I do not mean Ragnaroek compatibility. I mean its own evolution.

There are lots of big deployments in 1.8 now. They all can easily
upgrade to Ragnaroek (provided they're running PHP4), but going to
Vinland would be a big step as all configs and templates need to be
converted or rewritten, and most likely many components will be
missing still from new MidCOM when Vinland is released.

Therefore we will need to support Ragnaroek for at least some 4 years.
And I would imagine during that time some evolution will happen there,
to keep it compatible with the rest of the software stack (say, PHP6),
and to add new needed components.

However, what I want to be strict about is that any new updates to
Ragnaroek or components in it should stay compatible with 8.09.0
release of Ragnaroek. So when somebody goes to LTS they should safely
perform upgrades within the LTS branch.

If component changes that break backwards compatibility (with configs,
URLs, templates, whatever) will be needed, then those must be done by
forking the component, not by breaking it for existing LTS users.

How should we provide upgrades for previous installations?
If 10.09 will change database structure for example, how many future
 releases should support upgrades?

I would imagine we can make some "baseline" releases that you must go
through to upgrade your data. As long as they're documented this is
fine.

Hi, all!

Midgard Gathering 2008

November 6th - 9th 2008

Agenda

The gathering is scheduled to happen after Midgard 8.09 "Ragnaroek"
release and will focus on discussions and hacking around what will be
Midgard 9.03 "Ragnaroek+1".

Unit testing workshop (Thu November 6th)

Ragnaroek+1 feature planning

Midgard and Vala discussion

Neutron and future Midgard user interface

MidCOM 3 hacking

Midgard organization and IPRs: as-is, foundation, ASF, FSFe, ...

Midgard and authentication: Kerberos, OAuth and friends

Midgard-on-mobile: packaging, Jabber replication

...and of course beer and sauna!

The event has been named "Midgard Gathering" instead of the more
traditional "Midgard developer meeting", as end-users will be more
than welcome to attend. If many end-users turn up we will arrange a
Midgard tutorial or workshop for them.

Venue

Otakaari 20, Espoo, Finland

The second Midgard gathering of 2008 will be held in Otaniemi, right
next to the Helsinki University of Technology campus. Facilities
provided include a meeting area, very fast internet connection and a
sauna.

http://www.tky.fi/fi/teekkareille/tilat/saunat/ok20-tilat/

arranging their own accommodation.

Bunk beds are available at the meeting venue for some, and there are
many Midgardians in the area who can provide couchsurfing options.
