Midgard 1.9 back to focus

  1. Midgard 1.9 back to focus

    Hi, all

    Midgard2 has been getting a lot of developer love lately, and for a
    good reason. It is great to finally be there, and legacy-free!

    But, before we completely forget 1.x series, I think it would be good
    to switch attention back to Midgard 1.x series. We need to get a
    stable release out reasonably soon.

    To revisit 1.9 goals with some new insight, I see the following:

    * Midgard 2 testing grounds
    - An environment that can run both MidCOM 2.9 and MidCOM 3 on same setup
    - Version offering both Midgard 1.x and 2.x APIs (including D-Bus)
    so developers have time to learn the new tools
    * Simpler environment
    - Asgard as the only shipped admin UI
    - PHP5 only
    * East start-up
    - Super-easy database install and initial site setup tool (that we
    can later port to Midgard2)
    - Good packages for a number of Linux distributions (via openSUSE
    build service?) + MacPorts

    As I will be away in May the completion of these items is left to the
    rest of the team (particularly Piotras, Tero and Rambo). However, we
    shouldn't be very far from this situation except for loads of testing
    needed.

    Hi!

    Currently Midgard 1.9 and MidCOM 2.9 combination is not that far away. Last time when I checked the Super-easy installer, there were issues remaining with PEAR packages.

    Midgard 1.9 stabilization with MidCOM 2.9 is quite essential if we truly want to speed up the developement of MidCOM 3.0. Currently only way to start doing things with MidCOM 3.0 is a long upgrade path from the stable version.

    And I can tell that once you taste the possbilities of MidCOM 3.0 and new Midgard2 there's no turning back.

    Should we try and get the 1.9+2.9 combination out before june?

    The only one major issue now is midcom's pear channel for Midgard
    1.9/2.0. Without this, even testing current state is pointless.

    We need:

    * pear channel dedicated for 1.9/2.0
    * new release of midgard element role pear package

    We need: * pear channel dedicated for 1.9/2.0 * new release of midgard element role pear package

    Both done, so anyone can start testing at any time.
